Why it exists
Omegle shut down in November 2023 after fourteen years, and what replaced it was mostly worse — sites buried in redirect ads, sites that were fronts for webcam services, and sites with no moderation at all. The underlying idea was good: being able to talk to a random person, anywhere, with no profile and no history. The delivery had failed.
StrangerChat is an attempt at that idea built the other way round — starting from the safety constraints and accepting a smaller product as the price.
Who runs it
StrangerChat is built and operated independently by a small team based in Hyderabad, India. It is not backed by a larger company, and it is not part of any advertising or webcam network.
Everything published here — the guides, the safety writing, the topic pages — is written in-house by the people who build the product. When we describe how matching, moderation or payments work, we are describing our own implementation rather than repeating general advice.

The decisions we made, and what they cost
No camera, ever. There is no video, no voice, and no way to upload a photo or file. Conversations are text, with emoji, stickers and GIFs picked from a pre-moderated library — nothing a user supplies themselves. Text can be filtered and reviewed; live video cannot, not by a team this size, and nearly every catastrophic incident in this category involved video. The cost is real: a large share of people looking for an Omegle alternative want video and leave immediately.
Sign-in required. This is the decision users object to most, and we keep it because the alternative is worse. On a platform where nobody has an account, a ban means nothing — the person returns within seconds. You stay anonymous to the people you chat with; you are not anonymous to the moderation system. The cost is a real drop in signups at exactly the wrong moment in the funnel.
Nothing is stored. Conversations are not saved and cannot be retrieved after they end, by you or by us. The cost is that we cannot review a chat after the fact unless it was reported while it was live.
Strictly 18+. Age is collected at sign-up and enforced server-side, not by a checkbox on a splash screen.
How moderation works
Any user can report their chat partner for spam, abuse, sexual content, or anything else. Reports are validated on the server — the system verifies the reporter genuinely was in that conversation, and allows one report per chat. Without that, a report button becomes a weapon for punishing people who disagree with you.
Blocking is permanent and mutual: blocked users are never matched with you again in either direction. Accumulated reports lead to account bans, and because sign-in is required, a ban actually removes someone.
On AI
During very quiet periods, when no human partner is available, a user may be matched with an AI conversation partner rather than left waiting indefinitely. We would rather state that plainly than have anyone discover it. If you would prefer a person, hit Next and the search continues.
How we make money
Two ways, both stated openly. Advertising on public content pages, and — on wide desktop screens only — a single banner in the empty space beside the chat window. Never inside the conversation itself, never between messages, and never on a phone, where there is no room for an ad that is not taking space from the person you are talking to. And an optional Premium purchase that removes ads entirely and adds gender and country matching preferences plus priority in the queue.
Premium is a one-time purchase for a fixed period. It is not a subscription, it never auto-renews, and it expires on its own. We do not sell user data, and there is very little to sell — we do not store conversations and a chat partner never learns who you are.
What we are not
Not a dating service, not a hook-up app, and not a way to meet people in person. There are no profiles, no photos, no follower counts, no friend lists, and no way to exchange contact details or find someone again. If that is what you are after, this is the wrong product.
Where we might be wrong
Text-only excludes people who genuinely want face-to-face contact. Mandatory sign-in is friction that loses users who would have behaved perfectly well. And a platform this size cannot promise the moderation coverage of a company with a trust-and-safety department — which is exactly why we tell you to never share identifying details, never send images, and never send money, on our platform or any other.
Our safety guide is written on that assumption rather than on the assumption that our moderation is perfect.

StrangerChat is available as an installable app on Windows through the Microsoft Store. It is the same product as the website, packaged so it opens in its own window and can be pinned to the taskbar — there is no separate account and nothing extra to pay for.
