Why text and not voice
Text gives you something a call cannot: time. You get a few seconds to assemble a sentence, you see the words written down, and you can scroll back to read what your partner actually wrote rather than what you thought you heard. That makes it the right first step for anyone who freezes up speaking — you get the repetitions in before pronunciation and listening become the bottleneck.
It is not a complete substitute. Text will not fix your accent and it will not train your ear. What it will do is get you producing the language, which is the step most learners skip for years.
