How to Spot a Catfish in an Online Chat: 9 Red Flags

By the StrangerChat team6 min read

A catfish is someone who pretends to be a different person online, with a made-up name, age, life story or photos, usually to win trust they can use later. The clearest warning signs are a story that keeps shifting, a push to move somewhere more private, and sooner or later a request for money, photos or personal details.

Most people you meet online are exactly who they seem. But catfishing is common enough, and the consequences can be serious enough, that it is worth knowing the pattern.

Why catfishing looks different on anonymous chat

On a dating app, a catfish uses fake photos and a fake profile. On an anonymous text chat like StrangerChat, nobody has a profile or photos to fake. Your match only sees your country, your gender and the interests you share.

So catfishing shows up differently. Someone volunteers a detailed identity, a job, a backstory, a reason to trust them, and then tries to take the conversation somewhere else. The fake identity is not the goal. It is the tool for getting you off a platform with moderation and onto one without it.

9 red flags to watch for

1. They want to move to another app, fast

“add me on Snapchat” or “what’s your Instagram?” within a few minutes of meeting is the most common warning sign. A private app takes the conversation away from reporting tools and can expose your real identity. Someone genuine will understand if you would rather keep chatting where you are. See what “move to DMs” really means.

2. Their story keeps changing

They said they were 24, and now it is 27. They were in one city, and now they mention another. Everyone misremembers occasionally, but a catfish is maintaining a character, and the details tend to slip. Casually returning to something they told you earlier is a gentle way to check.

3. They seem almost too perfect

They love the same obscure band, share your exact sense of humour and agree with everything you say. Real people have friction and opinions of their own. Someone mirroring you perfectly may simply be working from what you have already told them.

4. The affection arrives very fast

Intense compliments, “I’ve never connected with anyone like this” or talk of a special bond within a single conversation is sometimes called love-bombing. It builds a sense of obligation that makes later requests harder to refuse.

5. They always have a reason not to be verified

In online relationships that go beyond a single chat, a catfish always has an excuse: the camera is broken, they are travelling, now is not a good time. One excuse is normal. A pattern of them is not.

6. They ask for your photos

StrangerChat has no photo sharing, so a request for pictures always means sending them somewhere else. Never send photos to someone you have just met, and never send anything intimate. Images can be saved, shared and used to threaten you.

7. A crisis appears that only money can fix

A medical bill, a stranded trip, a frozen bank account, an investment that cannot wait. However sympathetic the story, a stranger asking you for money, gift cards or crypto is the clearest red flag there is. The guide to online chat scams walks through how these usually start.

8. They dig for personal details

Questions about your full name, school, workplace, neighbourhood or daily routine go beyond small talk. Keep your answers general. You can have a great conversation without anyone knowing where to find you.

9. They get pushy when you say no

Guilt (“I thought you trusted me”), sulking or anger when you set a boundary is a strong signal. Someone chatting in good faith accepts a no.

What to do if you think you are talking to a catfish

How StrangerChat makes catfishing harder

No platform can stop someone lying about themselves in a text message. What design can do is take away the tools a catfish relies on. On StrangerChat there are no profiles or photos to fake, your match never sees your name, age or email, and everyone has to sign in, so a ban applies to an account rather than a throwaway session. Report and block are built into every chat.
