A private message on a social platform.
How to use it
“Move to DMs” means continuing privately elsewhere. On stranger-chat apps, be cautious — pressure to switch platforms quickly is a common scam pattern.
Examples
- someone slid into my dms about crypto... blocked
In a real chat
Stranger: ur fun, dm me on insta?
You: haha thanks, but i keep chats on here
Stranger: come on its easier
You: nah im good. so what were you saying about the concert?
Where it comes from
“Direct message”, from social platforms like Twitter (now X) and Instagram, where it means a private message rather than a public post.
Is it friendly or rude?
Neutral in general. On a stranger chat site, though, “move to DMs” or “add me on…” is a request to leave the platform, and that deserves some caution.
Spellings and variations
“dm”, “dms” and “slide into the dms” all refer to private messages, and “pm” (private message) is the older forum term. “add me”, “what’s your snap” and “move to telegram” are the same request aimed at a specific app.
Common mistakes
The biggest pitfall is agreeing to move platforms quickly with someone you have just met. Scams, sextortion and fake romances usually begin by moving the conversation somewhere with no report button. If someone keeps pushing after you have said no, that alone is a reason to report them and hit Next.
