The polite way to end a chat is to say you are going before you go. One short, friendly line is enough. You do not need an excuse, an explanation or a long goodbye.
Online, it is tempting to just close the tab. Most people have been on the other end of that, though: halfway through a sentence, waiting for a reply that never comes. A quick goodbye takes three seconds and leaves both of you with a better memory of the chat.
Does a stranger really need a goodbye?
Nobody is owed one, but it is a small kindness that makes random chat a nicer place to be. Anonymous conversations carry no reputation, which is exactly why ordinary courtesy matters: it is the main thing keeping the experience pleasant. It helps you too. Ending on a warm note makes it easier to start the next conversation in a good mood.

When the conversation went well
- “gtg, but this was genuinely fun. take care!”
- “I have to head off, thanks for the chat about [whatever you talked about]”
- “going to sleep before I get any weirder 😄 night!”
- “ttyl, and good luck with the exam tomorrow”
Mentioning something specific from the conversation is the warmest option, because it shows you were actually listening.
When it just fizzled out
- “I’ll let you go, nice talking!”
- “think we’ve run out of steam haha, have a good one”
- “going to head off, hope the rest of your day goes well”
- “I’m going to hit Next, but it was nice to meet you”
There is no need to pretend a quiet chat was amazing. A neutral, kind line is honest and still polite.
When you are busy
- “sorry, something came up and I have to go. take care!”
- “dinner’s ready, gtg 👋”
- “need to get back to work, thanks for the chat”
- “have to run, but this was a nice break”
When you do not owe anyone a goodbye
Everything above applies to ordinary conversations. It does not apply when someone is rude, turns the chat sexual when you did not want that, pressures you for personal details, asks for money or pushes you to move to another app. In those cases, leave straight away without explaining yourself.

What if they try to keep you talking?
Occasionally someone ignores a goodbye and keeps sending messages, or asks you to stay. Say it once more, clearly and kindly, “I really do have to go, take care”, and then leave. Ending a conversation you have already ended politely is not rude.
A note on brb
BRB means you are coming back, so it is not a goodbye. If you are leaving for good, use GTG or TTYL instead, so the other person is not left waiting for you.
