Chat slang

What does AFK mean?

AFK

stands for “Away From Keyboard”

Not at the device right now. Born in gaming and old-school chat.

How to use it

Similar to “brb” but often for longer or unspecified time: “gonna be afk for a bit”.

Examples

In a real chat

Stranger: sorry was afk, cooking
You: no worries, whats on the menu
Stranger: attempting pasta from scratch
You: brave. report back

Where it comes from

“Away from keyboard”, from online games and early chat systems, where it warned others that you had stepped away and your character or account was sitting idle.

Is it friendly or rude?

Neutral and practical. It is a status update rather than a goodbye.

Spellings and variations

“afk” is standard, and “going afk” or “afk 5” (away for about five minutes) are common in games. Coming back is “back” or “bak”. In gaming, an “afk player” is someone sitting idle in a match, which is a complaint rather than a status update.

Common mistakes

In a one-on-one chat, AFK without a time can feel like the conversation is over, so add a rough time if you plan to return. In multiplayer games, going AFK mid-match lets your team down and can get you reported. Either way, do not assume a stranger will still be there when you get back.
