Chat slang

What does IMO mean?

IMO

stands for “In My Opinion”

Marks a statement as personal opinion. “IMHO” adds “humble”.

How to use it

Keeps debates friendly: “imo the book was better”.

Examples

In a real chat

Stranger: the book is always better than the movie
You: imo not always. some adaptations fix the pacing
Stranger: name one
You: ok this could take a while

Where it comes from

“In my opinion”, from early online forums, where it helped keep debates civil. “IMHO” (in my humble opinion) came alongside it and is often used with a touch of irony.

Is it friendly or rude?

Polite and measured. It marks a statement as a personal view rather than a fact, which lowers the temperature of a disagreement.

Spellings and variations

“imho” adds “humble”, “imo” is the everyday version, and “ime” means “in my experience”. “unpopular opinion:” and “hot take:” do a similar job when the view is deliberately provocative.

Common mistakes

IMO does not turn a claim about facts into an opinion; “imo the earth is flat” is still a factual claim. Stacking it with other softeners (“idk imo maybe”) makes you sound unsure of everything. And a sarcastic “imho” in front of an aggressive take is usually read as the opposite of humble.

Questions about IMO

What is the difference between imo and imho?
IMHO adds “humble”. Sometimes it is sincere; often it is ironic, placed before a very confident opinion.
Does imo make an argument weaker?
Not really. It signals that you know others may disagree, which usually makes people more willing to listen.
